Staged Beatnik Photo from 1959 Perpetuates Patriarchal Subjugation

“The Well-Equipped Pad.” Life Magazine, 1959

I’d like to share some snippets of the research informing my forthcoming book. Above is a staged photo of beatniks who were actually paid models, featured in Life magazine in 1959. Of course the baby is depicted as thrown away like trash while sleeping on the bare ground, and the woman stands parallel to the stove as if just another piece of furniture in the background—both the woman and child translate to nonhuman here. While the dude takes up the center of the tableau, consuming « cool » media, perpetuating the patriarchal nightmare of subjugation. This unfortunate relic is a reminder of where the status-quo of American society is torpedoing toward right now. Is there enough cultivated resistance to thwart it? I hope so.
